Ipswich Town 2-0 Chelsea, Premier League: Post-match reaction, ratings

Chelsea made a sluggish and unfocused start to the game, and were made to pay for it when Liam Delap got to a ball just before Filip Jörgensen and earned himself a rather dubious penalty barely ten minutes into the game. And unfortunately there was nothing dubious about his unerring conversion, giving his side the lead and truly igniting the fervor of the home crowd.

Delap was playing like a man possessed and almost doubled their lead just a few seconds later, but Jörgensen made the save and then we finally woke up and started playing.

But neither luck, nor VAR were on our side, as Cole Palmer hit the post from a free kick (and Christopher Nkunku somehow didn’t score the rebound), then João Félix was deemed offside as he scored off a Palmer cross even though there was not enough actual video evidence to overturn the on-field call.

Marc Cucurella, Moisés Caicedo, and Enzo Fernández all come close to scoring before Palmer saw a great shot tipped onto the crossbar as the first 45 flew by without us getting some just reward for our efforts.

Chelsea made a good start to the second half, but just like in the first, it were the home side who cashed in, this time via an awful pass by Axel Disasi, and a great finish from former Chelsea youngster Omari Hutchinson.

The rest of the game was spent with Ipswich completely sitting back (and occasionally countering with one-man wrecking crew Liam Delap) and Chelsea trying to break them down. Or at least that’s what we were trying to do in theory.

But we did not. We did not even come close.

Carefree.

  • Back-to-back defeats for the first time this season; now winless in three
  • Just 1 goal scored in our last 3 games
